I recently turned 19, which is a blue age to my brain. I thought it might be fun to do a post on names that are similarly colored. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, google synaesthesia and all will become clear. There is also a link to the wiki page in my first post about the Rose names.

So the blue of 19 is a dark, but maybe not navy, blue. See the blue of the ocean? That’s pretty much it. I have some blue names on my list, but this rich shade is a bit more rare, and usually it’s in conjunction with blonde hair. I think it’s from reading too much Little House on the Prairie as a kid; Laura always had to wear red while her sister Mary wore blue to go with her blonde hair. I remember them switching ribbons and getting in trouble with Pa. I loved those books an abnormal amount. Anyway, the names I can think of with a similar hue to nineteen:

  • Mary (probably due to the Virgin always being depicted with blue robes)
  • Lucy (No clue why, but it’s a lovely, lovely, shade)
  • Blythe
  • Zenaida (off of Lola’s lists, it’s more of a navy though, quite a bit darker)
  • Beatrix
  • Dahlia
  • Henry/Hank
  • Neil

And some blues that aren’t so dark:

  • Dorothy/Dorothea (a light, cornflower blue)
  • Milagros (blue/seafoam green, very ocean-y)
  • Muriel (same as Milagros)
  • Philomena (baby blue)
  • Sanne
  • Susannah
  • Zelda
  • Benedict
  • Hugo
  • Leopold
  • Paul
  • William
  • Lucinda
  • Elinor (this spelling only)

There seems to be no rhyme and reason to my synaesthesia, which often leaves me to wonder if that’s what it actually is, or if it’s just associations. But I have no association that would make many of these names blue. I call it “synaesthesia light.” Anyway, the color of nineteen might explain why I love Lucy so much lately; I’ve definitely been giving it a lot of thought, along with Lucinda, which isn’t so dark as Lucy, but a nice light blue. Some combos may be forthcoming, but I’m not sure about that. I haven’t been able to get my lists here and am sort of bereft without them. I haven’t been in much of a combo making mood lately.

What are your “blue” names? Where do our lists differ? If you’re not synaesthetic, what do you think of the names on this list? Like them, don’t? See any common thread?

And I’d also like to take this opportunity to implore any lurkers to comment! I won’t bite, I promise, and you must be pretty cool since you’re reading my blog in the first place. Stay a while! 🙂
